Under 14 Div 3 Football Championship (13 aside) Venue Clarecastle Friday 30th July:
Clarecastle: 1-05 Clooney-Quin 3-07 Failure to take their chances when they enjoyed several periods of dominance proved costly for this young Clarecastle outfit in round 2 of the championship. Clooney-Quin despite playing into a strong breeze, got off to a blistering start with two goals inside five minutes, their first coming in the second minute despite the best efforts of Clarecastle goalie Ml McDermott. Clarecastle responded with a Dylan Hanrahan point on four minutes following a good passing movement with Paul Dolan, they then went on to enjoy a period of dominance but all they had to show for their efforts was a point from Ben Moloney in the 12th minute. Jack Murphy and Paul Dolan brought some great saves from the Clooney-Quin goalie, but overall they had some bad wides, which were to prove costly in the end.
On 20 minutes, Clarecastle lost wing back Ruairi Crimmins who was having a fine game, through injury, he was replaced by Willie Tomasi who went on to give a man of the match performance, especially in the second half. A pointed free by Ml McDermott left Clarecastle trailing 0-03 to 2-00 by the 23rd minute, but Clooney-Quin finished the half strongly with three unanswered points.
Clooney-Quin aided by the strong breeze started the second half brightly scoring a goal and a point in the first 2 minutes. But credit to this young Clarecastle side they didn’t throw in the towel, but battled gamely, several positional switches and substitutes Jack Hayes and Kevin Mulcaire making a big difference. With Brian Clancy, Paul Dolan and especially Willie Tomasi in control in defence they took the game to Clooney-Quin, a pointed free by Ml McDermott and a Ben Moloney goal set up by Kevin Mulcaire left just two scores between the sides by the 38th minute. Clarecastle piled on the pressure and two goal bound efforts by Evan Wiley and Jack Murphy were saved by the excellent Clooney-Quin goalie which spurred on his side to score three further points to seal a deserved victory, in the final minute Clarecastle were awarded a penalty, but Daire Crimmins well struck effort was expertly saved. Clarecastle: Ml McDermott, Ml McCarthy, Darren Crowe, Daire Crimmins, Brian Clancy, Leon Devitt, Paul Dolan, Dylan Hanrahan, Ruairi Crimmins, Ben Moloney, Evan Wiley, Jack Murphy, Jordan Barnes.
