Clare Cup Division 1 Round 9

Clarecastle 1-12 Tulla 1-12

at Clarecastle

While the Magpies had nothing to play for after just missing out on a semi-final spot over the weekend, Tulla's lives were on the line needing at least a draw to avoid relegation from the top division. As a result, this was a competitive, bruising encounter that in the end proved costly for the home side as injuries to Mark McNamara, Conor Plunkett and Derek Quinn saw them retire early for the contest with just over a week to go until their second championship game against Broadford.

Clarecastle's forwards worked very hard and showed plenty of teamwork but some of their handpassing and final ball showed a rustiness that needs to be ironed out before the championship. However credit must also be given to the visitors defence who were hard-tackling and tenacious throughout. Best for the Magpies up front were Jonathan Clancy and Tyrone Kearse while Seanie Moloney and Conor Plunkett shone brightest at the back and it was Kearse who opened the scoring in the second minute with a free after Aaron Considine was fouled.

However, major surgery to the defence had to be administered after only six minutes with the withdrawl of full-back Mark McNamara who was replaced by Andrew Page who went to wing-back, Kevin Clohessy into the corner and Ollie Plunkett manning Mondo's central spot.

Clarecastle did double their lead after 10 minutes with a Kearse '65 but after Aidan Lynch opened Tulla's account three minutes later, Tulla settled into their stride; Lynch hitting another brace, Andrew Quinn also pointed with only a Johno Clancy score in riposte.

And the visitors maintained that form until the break, supplied by half-backs Paul and Brian Lynch and picking off a flurry of points from Aidan Lynch, Andrew Quinn, Eanna Torpey and an impressive long distance effort from Brian Lynch to hold an 0-8 to 0-5 half-time lead.

For the second half Darragh Moloney replaced Jamie O’Conner at full-forward and it had an immediate effect when he was fouled in the opening minute for Kearse to convert while scoring himself a minute later that inspired the Magpies to pull level soon afterwards with another free.

By the 38th minute, the home side were 0-10 to 0-08 ahead following scores from Derek Quinn and a Kearse free but their stride was hampered by the loss of Conor Plunkett who succumbed to a hand injury.

Over the next ten mins Tulla had their most productive spell. A Tulla lineball came back off the Clarecastle upright and substitute Trevor Vaughan crashed the sliotar to the net,  Aiden Lynch scored his fifth point and substitute Conor Halloran chipped in with two further points to leave Tulla leading 1-12  to 0-11 on 47 minutes.

Clarecastle still did not give up the fight but made hard work of breaking down the Tulla defence, before finally grabbing the goal they craved in the 53rd minute when a Tyrone 20 metre free was expertly saved by Philip Brennan only for Fergal Griffin to slam the rebound to the Tulla net. A minute later another great run by Johno Clancy resulted in a Clarcastle point to tie to scores 1-12 each.

But the game finish badly for Clarecastle, when Derek Quinn went over on an ankle in the final minute.

Tough game, could have gone either way..injuries didnt help us...Must mention Philip Brennan, has had his critics at times but his 3 saves last night outline his class..The 2 from Johnno and the free from Tyrone. The stop in the first half to the top corner is the best save seen in Clarecastle pitch for many a day, maybe even the best since the field opened...But for him we,d have won handy...
